Good evening readers!
This is the second post for today and it's in English! WOW, you should be very proud of me 😂 Today's first post was about The Queen of Nothing cover reveal and excerpt, so if you haven't read it yet, you can go here and then come back to this post and read my spoilery reaction to it!

Holly Black, I can't believe that we have to wait NINE FREAKING MONTHS to read The Queen of Nothing after reading that excerpt. Don't get me wrong, I still hate Taryn, because I'd never behave like her with my sister, but GOSH. She DID something good for one single time in her life. Locke dead is a BIG relief. He just got on my nerves. I couldn't stand him AT ALL.

After that ending in The Wicked King I was a bit disappointed because I had high expectations and I expected SO MUCH MORE. Cardan and Jude are two awesome MCs, but I think that they could be so much more. The only chapter that satisfied me was the one in Cardan's room. You do remember it, don't you?😜

On The Queen of Nothing cover we see that there are different and important elements:

⇨ a broken crown: this can be both for Jude and Cardan. Do you think that Cardan will be able to keep his ass on the Faerie Throne? I wouldn't bet on that. Ok, he showed up to be much more brilliant and ahead of everyone than we thought he was at the beginning, but could he seriously do everything alone without his beloved Jude?

⇨ ice: just as before, maybe the Faery Kingdom is in trouble? What's gonna happen while Jude is in the mortal world? Or maybe it's about the freezing feelings that Jude and Cardan have for each other now?

⇨ a serpent: is there another traitor? I bet all my money on Taryn. I'm sorry but I just can't stand her and I think that she would do anything to gain much more power than Jude.

⇨ blood and a broken berries necklace: ok, so this suggests me that we're gonna read about a lot of deaths, betrayals and battles. Well, this doesn't surprise us at all, does it?

And remember that Holly Black has only 300 pages to solve all these enigmas and to build the perfect ending to this story that always had A LOT of potential. Please, Holly, do not disappoint me. I think I won't recover.

Qualche giorno fa ho terminato la lettura di The Cruel Prince di Holly Black e ora non vedo l'ora di parlarne insieme a voi. Holly Black è una tra le mie autrici preferite, infatti The Coldest Girl in Coldtown e Modern Fairy Tales sono alcuni tra i miei libri preferiti a tema faeries e ora a questi posso aggiungere anche The Cruel Prince.

Ora vi spiego il perché.

The Cruel Prince era una delle uscite del 2018 che più aspettavo: amo il mondo dei faeries e la Black riesce sempre a descriverlo con gli elementi dark necessari, che spesso nella favolistica del romanzo vengono dimenticati.

La trama mi ha catturata da subito, come naturalmente la copertina e la ricercatezza dell'edizione. A spingermi però a eleggere questo libro come uno dei preferiti dell'anno sono stati i suoi personaggi.

In particolare Jude, la protagonista, è la mia preferita: da un atteggiamento inizialmente molto ingenuo e passivo, diventa sempre più forte e consapevole della realtà che la circonda, adattandosi completamente a questo mondo magico e giocando secondo le regole che le impone. Il suo specchio, la sua sorella gemella Taryn, è il completo opposto e quindi anche uno dei personaggi che meno ho sopportato. Si dimostra come la classica sorella invidiosa, che maschera tutta la sua ingenuità e bontà con una gentile facciata.

Poi abbiamo Madoc, loro patrigno e assassino dei loro genitori. Devo ammettere che Madoc è l'unico personaggio che durante tutto il romanzo non cambia, rimane sempre leale alle proprie convinzioni e le porta avanti nonostante tutto.

Infine abbiamo Cardan, che secondo me è un piccolo cucciolo con una "leggera" dipendenza da alcol. E' sempre circondato da fate e da ammiratori, ma a me è sembrato il più solo di tutti. Spero che la sua crescita continui anche nel volume successivo e che trovi anche lui un scopo per cui lottare, qualcosa che lo faccia sentire realizzato e libero da ciascun vincolo.

What could I become if I stopped worrying about death, about pain, about anything? If I stopped trying to belong? Instead of being afraid, I could become something to fear.

Un altro elemento essenziale nella grande riuscita di The Cruel Prince è la trama, avvincente, piena di plot twists, alcuni abbastanza prevedibili, altri sicuramente spiazzanti. Ad alcuni l'inizio può sembrare un po' lento, ma io in realtà l'ho trovato molto rilassante. I libri della Black sono un po' così: ti fanno conoscere bene i personaggi e il mondo in cui stai per lanciarti prima di farti prendere la rincorsa e tuffarti nella storia stessa. Penso, infatti, che la seconda parte si sia dimostrata più veloce ed entusiasmante proprio grazie alla pacatezza e alle continue descrizioni della prima.

We don't need to be good. But let's try to be fair.

Devo ammettere che mi mancavano le storie di Holly Black. Fin da I Segreti di Coldtown e Fate delle Tenebre ho sempre ammirato la sua immaginazione e il suo stile di scrittura. Ritrovare poi Roiben e Kaye da Tithe (Fate delle Tenebre #1) e Severin da Nel Profondo della Foresta è stata una sorpresa molto gradita. Quando finisce un racconto o una serie, infatti, si rimane sempre con quella sensazione di nostalgia di cui si è veramente consapevoli solo quando li ritrovi di nuovo.

I am going to keep on defying you. I am going to shame you with my defiance. You remind me that I am a mere mortal and you are a prince of Faerie. Well, let me remind you that means you have much to lose and I have nothing. You may win in the end, you may ensorcell me and hurt me and humiliate me, but I will make sure you lose everything I can take from you on the way down. I promise you this is the least of what I can do.

Consiglio The Cruel Prince a tutti coloro che amano il fantasy e in particolar modo il mondo intrigante e strategico delle fate. Complotti, tradimenti e rivelazioni non mancheranno, quindi cosa aspettate a siglare un patto con Holly Black e ad essere trasportati nel mondo di The Folk of the Air?

L'altro ieri in libreria è uscito Il Principe Crudele, traduzione italiana edita Mondadori, che secondo me è stata curata nei minimi dettagli. Prossimamente uscirà anche il secondo volume della serie, The Wicked King, che, stando alle prime indiscrezioni e recensioni, ci toglierà il fiato.
